Inside Jokes

  • Two locations are named after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird; A building with a sign the reads "The Laird" and Eastman High School. In addition, Kevin Eastman supplies a voice cameo.
  • Presumably as a joke by his long-time friend and collaborator Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd is given an introductory credit despite an over 30-year career of more than 130 acting credits in film and TV!

Trivia

  • This film marks the first time the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are voiced by actual teenagers! This was recommended by Seth Rogen to emphasize the film's child-oriented approach and felt the decision to cast teenagers for the Turtles made it stand out from previous versions, saying "something very intuitive became something that really opened up our version”.
  • The cast recorded their voice roles together in groups rather than independently from one another, a contrast to the norm for animation. This was partly influenced by Seth Rogen from his experience recording with Donald Glover and Billy Eichner for “The Lion King” (2019). A single recording session could include up to seven actors and it allowed for the cast to play off each other as well as employ a lot of improvisation in their performances. According to Seth Rogen, "For every session, we lumped people together. We really went out of our way and bent over backward to try to capture that improvisational energy you get when a lot of people are in the same place at the same time."
  • The filmmakers’ main influences for the film come from the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and the 90s live-action movie trilogy while the films “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", the Jackie Chan films "Police Story" and "Rumble in the Bronx", the crime drama "Chungking Express", the period film "Boogie Nights", and the cinematography works of Emmanuel Lubezki and Spike Jonze were their influences for the film’s visual style. In addition, the films "Stand by Me", "The Edge of Seventeen", "Lady Bird", and the TV series "Freaks and Geeks" were influences for director Jeff Rowe to make it "the ultimate teenage coming-of-age film".
