Synopsis

While looking for a place to go on holiday, eccentric inventor Wallace discovers there's no cheese left in the house and decides he and his dog Gromit should go to a place where there is some. Knowing the moon is made of cheese, they build a rocket ship to try and get some.

Trivia

The character of Wallace was loosley inspired by Nick Park's father, who like Wallace, was an inventor himself.
The film took over six years to make with production beginning in 1982 with Nick Park doing almost everything single-handedly. Originally the short was to be his thesis film as part of his graduation project from the National Film and Television School (who received a co-production credit). For the next 2 years, Nick overshot his budget and deadline and only finished ten minutes. In 1985, he asked Aardman producers/founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton to do a lecture at his film school to seek advice for his film which would lead Nick Park to a job at Aardman Animations and the film would soon be finished around other projects (including Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" video). Nick worked on it part time while working on another animated short at Aardman (“Babylon”), as an exchange for Aardman to finish A Grand Day Out, which would still be funded by the National Film and Television School.
