Inside Jokes

  • The character of Stinky Whizzleteats is based on singer and actor Burl Ives (who is even called that in the script!) and the song "Happy Happy Joy Joy" even features several references from his songs and movies.

Trivia

  • Billy West supplies Ren's psychotic laugh
  • This episode was almost not made due to Nickelodeon's hatred of the story. As a result, it took longer from its inception to emergence and many crucial gags took so long to get it approved. Nick was also afraid it would terrify kids due to Ren's creepy smiles, so selected storyboards had to be removed in order for the episode to be made (and even then the episode was 2 months late due to delays at Nick). In fact, the shot of Ren walking to "go do nice things" was added at the last minute in order to replace the scenes that needed to be cut.
  • A storyboard sequence where Ren licks Stimpy's sweaty, flithy armpit after ironing his underwear did not make it passed the Nick story editors.

From TibbyH :

TV animation was never the same when The Ren & Stimpy show premiered. An important first season of television ended with one of the best episodes to ever grace the airwaves, "Stimpy's Invention". To say this cartoon is good is an understatement. Masterful storyboarding on top of wonderful writing breathe back live into the zombified animation industry. This also showcases how great of characters Ren Hoek and Stimpson J. Cat are, giving them three dimensional depth and showing how human they really are. Stimpy's an idiot, but he just wants to make Ren happy. To those who think this show is only fart jokes and gross out, give this episode a try. If "Happy Happy, Joy Joy" gets stuck in your head, you can thank me later.

From Kuckoo24 :

What can be said about the original Ren and Stimpy that hasn't been said? It was one of the most influential cartoons of the 90s (for better or for worse) and despite the fact that the creator is a terrible person, I still love this show, and this episode shows exactly why I love it. The writing is perfect, the animation is astounding, the jokes are hilarious, the characters are very three-dimensional, and it's just an outright perfect episode. What else to say but, happy happy joy joy! 10/10!
