BLUE RIBBON MERRIE MELODIES
The following is a listing of the Warner Bros. cartoons which were rereleased as "Blue Ribbon" Merrie Melodies
without their original opening credits.
The earliest cartoon to be issued first with "Blue Ribbon" titles was probably "My Little Buckeroo" (1938/Freleng) when the re-releasing program of its back catalogue began in September, 1943. The policy of granting full credits in reissuing these cartoons occurred after the end
of the 1955-1956 theatrical season, which was about the same time that Warner Bros. was in the final stages of selling much of the pre-1948 library (both live-action and animation titles) to Associated Artists Productions at an estimated price of $21 million (the deal was finalized
in April 1956).
The following information was posted on
Jerry Beck's Cartoon Research awhile back: "Many also wonder about the Oscar-like statue that appears on those Blue Ribbon titles. Here's a better shot of The Grand Shorts Award (at left). This award, won by THE LONE STRANGER AND PORKY and other Looney Tunes, was bestowed on the most popular shorts of the year, decided by the readers of THE EXHIBITOR, a movie theatre trade magazine from Jay Emanuel Publications. Warners fooled theatre owners into thinking their reissues were hand picked award winning shorts. In reality they reissued practically all their color cartoons at one time or another. "
