Quote:Presenting POPEYE THE SAILOR: The 1940s Vol. 1 (Warner Archive Collection) Street Date: 12/11/18.
Here we go again. To all of you who wish and hope the vaults of Warner Bros. could reopen to allow more of the classic cartoon treasures to emerge – Now is your time. Here’s what you can do to help (Take Two).
Last year I used whatever super powers I had to make a set of black and white Porky Pig cartoons available in an effort to convince to the studio there was an audience out there for such compilations. After several bumps in the road the set eventually broke even. But “brake even” isn’t good enough for a mega corporation. Long story short – we have one more shot. One. This is it. Perhaps a set of color cartoons, films the collectors do not have, or never had on home video (no VHS, no previous DVD or cable broadcast). A small set – 14 cartoons perhaps.
Here it is – a continuation of the Paramount Popeye cartoons. The next 14. No frills, no bonus materials, no audio commentaries. Transferred from the original Technicolor negatives. Jim Tyer animation. Politically incorrect shorts, uncut. The set will be available, separately, on both DVD and blu-ray.
The website to pre-order is supposedly going up today and we will update this post with the link when we get it. I highly recommend this set – I think you will be pleased. The frame grabs below were snapped off my living room flat screen by my iPhone, off the blu-ray. If this looks good to you – I ask that you pre-order, or order it in December. Let’s prove to Warner Bros. that we want further volumes of Popeye 1940s and 1950s – and we want more Warner and MGM cartoons restored and released. It’s seriously up to you. Quote:POPEYE THE SAILOR: The 1940s, VOLUME ONE (1943-1945) NEW 2018 1080p HD MASTERS CREATED FROM 4K SCANS OF THE ORIGINAL NITRATE TECHNICOLOR NEGATIVES Run Time 99:00 Subtitles English SDH Sound Quality DTS HD-Master Audio 2.0 - English Aspect Ratio 4 X 3 FULL FRAME, ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO - 1.37:1 Product Color COLOR Disc Configuration BD 50
Lost at sea for decades – this set collects the first two Technicolor® seasons of Popeye’s animated theatrical shorts (1943-44 and 1944-45), making them available for the first time ever on home video: complete, intact and outrageously funny. What else would you expect from a two-fisted, spinach-munching sailor man?
The 1940s brought new sights and sounds to America’s favorite cartoon star. Regulars Olive Oyl and Bluto return, while Popeye resumes his riotous relationship with his shipmate Shorty and his naughty nephews Pipeye, Poopeye, Peepeye and Pupeye. With the addition of full color, cartoonists were now free to let loose with journeys to exotic lands and give Popeye a fresh stock of new friends and foes.
But it’s the eternal love triangle, Popeye and Bluto competing for the attention of Olive, that drives the majority of these zany situations – as well as the hilarious action-packed gags. Whether our heroes are posing as circus acrobats or puppeteers or even taking turns at being Superman, these gems from the Golden Age of Hollywood will blow you down with laughter.
Collection includes Her Honor, The Mare; The Marry-Go-Round; We're On Our Way To Rio; The Anvil Chorus Girl; Spinach Packin' Popeye; Puppet Love; Pitchin' Woo At The Zoo; Moving Aweigh; She-Sick Sailors; Pop-Pie A La Mode; Tops In The Big Top; Shape Ahoy; For Better Or Nurse; Mess Production. Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Volume 1 is intended for the Adult Collector and May Not Be Suitable for Children. Also available on DVD! This is great and everything but I'm a bit worried someone like Thad might overreact again about Warner Archive not using the correct martials (although, it's possible that Thad might have worked on this Popeye release to ensure the right care was done on it).

If they went back to the negatives, that should be a non-issue. Though I have to ask, what were WAC's sales expectations for Porky 101? Did they really expect it to sell like a modern blockbuster? Or is every animation release WAC puts out going to be promoted as a "last chance"? Edited by user Tuesday, November 20, 2018 8:44:44 PM(UTC)

Man, Thad did not overreact but did a great job for us fans, showing the tons of errors they've made with that set. If this release will come out ok we have to thank people like him.

Releasing the set on Blu-Ray is a good sign. So are those screenshots.
Even still, I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm sure this set will be an improvement over Porky Pig 101, but I'll wait for the reviews to come out before purchasing it. |

Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Volume 1 is intended for the Adult Collector and May Not Be Suitable for Children. Also available on DVD! When I read the claims of these bring off the nitrate negatives, I wondered whether that meant 4K scans as per Warner's current policy on scanning OCNs. Considering the extra effort to scan 3 times the running time of each cartoon at a higher resolution than most Warner Archive blu-ray restorations and recombining the colour records, I expect much better QC on this than the Porky Pig set. Whatever extra expenses incurred by WAC for all this is probably why we're bring roped into this "buy this or nothing else will come" hypetrain again. I didn't work on it but I knew they were doing it for a long time. Given the extent of their work (4K!!!) I see no reason to approach this with any trepidation. Bring on more restored cartoon Blu-Rays.

Man, Thad did not overreact but did a great job for us fans, showing the tons of errors they've made with that set. If this release will come out ok we have to thank people like him. I couldn't agree more. Thad did an important public service with his review of Porky Pig 101. In a response to Michael Barrier's review of the Porky Pig set, Jerry Beck said that "one lesson we've learned" is to never again do a set "using down and dirty copies". I have to think that the considerable negative backlash they received on Porky is a huge part of the reason why we are not now getting a 5-disc set stuffed with all the 40s and 50s Popeye color cartoons in shoddy video transfers from the 80s. Now, instead, we are getting the early Popeye color cartoons on BLU-RAY, folks. We should all be very glad that Thad wrote his review – and that others, too, came forward with justly deserved criticism of Porky Pig 101. I am definitely buying this. And THIS, for the record, is how I'd like to see Warner Archive release Tex Avery's MGM cartoons, too. Don't do a huge set right off the bat. Restore the first 14 cartoons or so (using the BEST master material available – so take a little more time to pick out the masters than you did for Tom and Jerry) and release them on a single-disc Blu-ray/DVD volume. Give Tex Avery a chance to find his audience with a PROPERLY DONE release. I also have to concur with what DawnShadow is saying under his headline: please spring for the Blu-ray version of this set if you can. We need to send Warner the message that we want classic Hollywood cartoons released in the best possible picture quality. Warner did new high-def transfers off the original negatives for this set – so let's reward them for it.

Let's put this into some perspective: as already explained, they culled this collection from the Technicolor negatives, and scanned them in 4K. It's going to look gorgeous, and surpass any available copies out there, without a doubt. Edited by user Wednesday, November 21, 2018 6:33:14 AM(UTC)

...also, I'm loving this recent Facebook comment from Warner Archive. Always nice to see the word "restoration". :) Quote:Every cartoon has its original Paramount open and closing logo and the original audio as well, as originally seen in theaters. This was all part of restoration from the original nitrate negatives.

Well. Here's my words: Buy it. I sure will be. This is the final straw from Warners. The tipping point. These titles never had any home release before; it's worth for what a long shot it is. Edited by user Wednesday, November 21, 2018 6:59:46 AM(UTC)

I originally had Batman: The Complete Animated Series on my Christmas list this year, but upon finding out it was $100 on Amazon, I decided to replace it with this.
Can't wait to see how these shorts will look in HD!

As someone who also grew up watching the color Popeyes in shoddy, splicey copies with faded colors and altered title sequences, this is totally unprecedented. I am excited beyond belief about this, and you'd better believe I'll be buying the set as soon as I can get my hands on some cash.
That said, does anybody know how much we should expect to pay for it?
