I've been asked a number of times what the guidelines are for submitting screenshots to the IAD, so I thought I would put up a little primer for what we're looking for. There is no process for putting them on the site yourself. With over 1800 cartoons having screenshots and more coming, the amount of webspace we use is fairly big, so we are in the process of transferring everything over to an Amazon Cloud server in order to keep costs down and relieviate the stress on our current server. But here's what you can do:
1: Please make sure the source material is as high quality as possible. I understand that a lot of early animation just isn't available on DVD, or any high quality format, but it should be as high quality as possible. Screen caps from a YouTube video are generally not going to work too well, unless you download a high quality copy of it. For that, I use a small program called Free YouTube Downloader which can be found at http://youtubedownloader.com/
2: For DVD copies I use a program called "Cyberlink PowerDVD." They're up to version 14 right now, but I've found Version 10 is the easiest to use if you can find it. You do have to be careful, though, because the size of the screencap you get depends on the size of the window you have open. So, it's easy to make them too big where they get pixillated, or too small where they lack any detail.
3: For mp4 or other formats on my computer, I use a free program called "VLC Media Player." It's kinda nifty and had a "capture screen" function which gives you a screenshot with the original format intact.
4: Most media players, although they may play bluray discs, won't allow you to take screenshots. This is because the studios believe that someone is going to take the time to do screen caps of the entire movie and piece them together. To get around this, I use a program called "AnyDVD" which is a plug in for your computer and disables the protection from most bluray discs. It isn't free, and it is a little pricey, but it works great.
5: Screenshots should be a minimum of 640 pixels wide.
6: For an 8 to 12 minute cartoon, I usually look for 20 - 25 shots. They should be representative of the cartoon as a whole. For older shorts, I prefer to have all of the title cards (including the credits) and all of the end cards. But with newer cartoons, where everybody gets screen credit including the guy who fills the Coke machine, this isn't really practical. For feature length titles, you can send anywhere from 50 to 60. These figures are just a rule of thumb, however. Send as many as you think necessary to give a good representation of the cartoon without going overboard.
7: Lower resolution screenshot sets may be replaced if a higher quality source is found.
Once again, please send as high quality as possible. Send them in either jpg or png format. I can edit them from there and format them correctly for the site.
You can either mail them directly to me at eutychus at intanibase.com or put them in a dropbox file. If you are emailing them, it's best if you don't put them in the body of the email itself, but attach them, either as separate files or as a zip file.
