TOM AND JERRY:
THE GENE DEITCH COLLECTION

ON DVD JUNE 2, 2015

Release Includes 13 Re-mastered Theatrical
Shorts and All-New Bonus Content

BURBANK, CA (February 5, 2015) - The work of popular animator Gene Deitch is the focus of Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection, available on DVD June 2, 2015 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE). This compilation will present viewers with 13 fully re-mastered theatrical shorts, produced by Deitch, plus brand-new bonus features. It's a release that collectors of classic animation, won't want to miss! Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection will retail for $26.99 SRP.

For decades, that tussling twosome Tom and Jerry have chased their way into the funny bones and hearts of moviegoers and television viewers in a variety of unforgettable cartoons. In the 1960s, acclaimed animation director Deitch, was selected to bring a new set of Tom and Jerry shorts to life. Adding his own distinctive style to the famous cartoon, Deitch worked with William L. Snyder's Prague-based animation studio, Rembrandt Films, to create 13 memorable shorts. This entertaining collection from WBHE brings Deitch's fun-filled cartoons together for the first time on DVD, completely re-mastered.

Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection will include two bonus features: "Tom and Jerry...and Gene: The Rembrant Years" as well as "Much Ado About Tom and Jerry."

"Over the years, there have been many artists who have put their own unique touch on Tom and Jerry cartoons. This collection recognizes the work of long-time animator Gene Deitch, who directed over a dozen shorts," commented Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President of Family and Animation Marketing. She added, "We're delighted to bring these beautifully remastered shorts to collectors. If you are a fan of classic Tom and Jerry shorts or just love animation, this is a must-own DVD for your home entertainment library."

Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry centers on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom's attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him. The original series is notable for having won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject: Cartoon seven times. Academy Award(s) & Oscar(s) are registered trademarks and service marks of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Whoa.

This is definitely not the release I was expecting. Love how the cover reproduced the designs accurately, though!

I would have preferred that these cartoons show up on the Golden Collections, most likely divided between Volumes 3 and 4; then we'd have these on Blu-ray! Sadly, that seems out of the question at this point.

Didn't see this one coming.

I don't know about getting this one though, seeing that it dares to make light of animal cruelty.

I don't like these cartoons. (No offense to Gene Deitch.) However, I still plan on adding this to my collection, because I am a bit of a cartoon completist especially when it comes to the MGM shorts.

Maybe I'll get this for kicks. After all, I've already got many of the Rudy Larriva Road Runner cartoons on DVD, and I find those to be the Looney Tunes equivalent to Gene Deitch's "Tom and Jerry" shorts.

Though I do wish those cartoons said "ENDUT! HOCH HECH!" at the end of them! XD

Not worth it for me, because I find these cartoons to be boring and not as good as the original Hanna and Barbera, and Chuck Jones directed Tom & Jerry cartoons.

It's more because both Gene Deitch's Tom and Jerrys and the Larriva Road-Runners tend to be downright bizarre; the very feeling you get from those cartoons can be truly unsettling.

Yet, those are still shown from time to time on CN's Looney Tunes block, AND the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry shorts are still played on a semi-regular basis on CN as well!

Wha'? Is this for real?! Sure there could be a market for the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerrys, but this is from a company that holds the rights to much, much, much more highly sought after cartoons. The mind boggles.

Maybe the 1975 Hanna-Barbera made-for-TV Tom & Jerrys will follow, and the blurb can talk about how H&B were back at the helm. I'd like to see those as well as the Filmation ones. (I know they're not very good, but just goes to show how sometimes, having seen something as a kid will create a fondness that stays with you.)

By the way -- when Channel 32 in Chicago started running Tom & Jerry in 1978, the very first one they aired was "Calypso Cat." Way to kick things off![tom] [jerry]

It's sad that Gene Deitch's reputation is shot because of these Tom and Jerrys
They are not bad by all means
The best ones are
- Carmen Get It
- The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit
- Dicky Moe
- Switchin' Kitten
- High Steaks

The only Gene Deitch T&J cartoon I believe is half-decent is Carmen Get It. In my opinion, it's the closest Deitch has gotten to the classic T&J humor. Also, I'm a sucker for cartoons that focus on classical music as its subject.

One thing that bothers me about these cartoons are the eery sound effects and awkward sound editing. It's just so bizarre and not pleasant to listen to!

The characters are off model, the animation is quirky in an unsettling sort of way, and the sounds effects (mostly vocalizations I believe) are nightmare-inducing. These were animated and produced in Eastern Europe somewhere on the cheap by people who knew nothing about the characters or the original cartoons. They have their place I guess, but they are hardly anyone's favorites.

About time. I personally like the Deitch shorts. Too bad it's not gonna be released on Blu-Ray.

To clarify LuckyToon's point, here's an excerpt from Michael Barrier's 1969 interview with Jones:

The distinction for me was that [Hanna and Barbera] would use a kind of personal damage. For example, Jerry might drive a golf ball right through Tom's teeth and all of Tom's teeth would break and fall out. To me, that's pretty painful. Now, the Coyote falling eight thousand feet and landing and getting up immediately, that seems to me to be a broad humor.

...though he did prefer them over Woody Woodpecker:

Because I'm a particular kind of man, I try to do my stuff tastefully, if broadly. To me, a character like Woody Woodpecker sometimes is wrong because Woody Woodpecker is not always provoked to do mischief. Bugs Bunny is always provoked. The Road Runner is a natural road runner being chased by a natural enemy. With Tom and Jerry, it was natural for a cat to be chasing a mouse.

Chuck Jones tried to add "personality" to a series that didn't require a lot of it. Hence a Grinch-like Tom, a cutesy Jerry, lots of poses (especially in "Cannery Rodent", the last Jones-directed Tom and Jerry), and gag routines that just didn't follow the "usual" Tom and Jerry formula. I personally like the Chuck Jones-directed cartoons, though, and they're definitely the best-looking cartoons of their time.

Jones did show disdain for his Tom and Jerry cartoons in later years.
