Tommy Stathes, through CartoonsOnFilm, has begun posting raw scans of Rare silents onto his Youtube channel.  Mostly from Out of the Inkwell, and Aesop’s Fables so far, though with more series in the future. Tommy says

We're now posting a wide variety of rare silent and early sound cartoons to YouTube. Enjoy, and please subscribe to the Cartoons On Film channel on YouTube!



Speaking with Tommy myself, he intends to keep consistently scans when possible, saving certain films and the restored copies for sets, though maybe posting clips in the future. Whatever the case may be, I’m excited to see more uploads!

And lest it be overlooked, make no mistake: If you support "Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored!", or any of this guy's other initiatives, this is what you are enabling to continue.

Your kindness and most importantly your sobriety on this is most appreciated! If someone like this was not in the mix and gumming up the works with an axe to grind, I think all of our factions would be happily working on so many different great things right now. Greatness without harassment and burned bridges. I'm hoping for better times ahead.

And lest it be overlooked, make no mistake: If you support "Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored!", or any of this guy's other initiatives, this is what you are enabling to continue.

Hah! Thank you, Nic. I think once there's no longer any enabling from certain individuals in our circles, the pinning will cease. We have to remain optimistic.

Mejo, despite the fact that the cartoons Tommy has released on disc are public domain, are new proprietary restorations from his label, Cartoons On Film. These proprietary restorations all contain various manipulations/new additions of material which render them unique and distinctive from raw copies of the original films. The physical media packaging, program introduction, and end titles for each individual film all contain notices of this proprietary nature. I’m not sure why this is hard to understand, and why people feel entitled to upload them to Youtube instead of supporting him by keeping them off, especially when Tommy’s label has been dedicated to making films out of circulation or (gasp!) previously lost available in the best way possible

Oh I see. It was just a bit confusing seeing that it was a public domain cartoon and I thought I was doing everybody a favor by getting a rare cartoon that is unlisted out onto YouTube. Just wish that he would take away my copyright strike though. I've learned my lesson.

Also, even when it's not a new restoration in question, it's not courteous to re-upload an exclusive posting of mine without permission. If something goes unlisted for some time, there's probably a good reason. There are also good reasons why my colleagues and I can't post anything and everything to YouTube, just because some people really want to see those things for free. We all have more home video and television projects in the works, and have to keep some material exclusive to those new releases and those specific outlets/venues/platforms/channels.

Anyway, getting back on track, I've already unsubscribed to all of his channels. And yet I still get sucked into his videos like the restorations of the Color Classics. Still, I don't mind downloading his videos for personal gratification. They are nice upgrades from the print's that I have been seeing and if they weren't made by Rockin' Pins, I would probably support him.

Found this print of Somewhere in Dreamland that you have uploaded 2 months ago, Tommy . I do wonder why you uploaded it, considering that Rockin' Pins already uploaded a print that also contained the original titles. Or is this your way of getting back at Mauricio Alvarado?

When it comes to YouTube uploads, home video projects, broadcast projects, or screenings, most of my curatorial decisions boil down to my own specific needs on a case-by-case basis. I wanted to highlight that film for the holiday season, as part of a New York Times article that came out about my work this past December. I happen to have a very nice 16mm print of the film, and therefore a scan of my own print wound up being the perfect addition to my channel for that specific occasion/need!

Oh, I understand. The reason I thought you uploaded it to spite Maurcia Alvado was due to incidents you had with him in the past. (BTW do I have permission to upload the opening and closing titles from ASTRA print of THE TIMID RABBIT that got taken down years ago? I promise i'll credit you)

I've been in this line of work/business for over 20 years, and the decisions I make with my films are based on my own personal goals—that's true before, during, and after those periods when other folks are doing their own things with similar material. In other words, I don't necessarily choose to do something based only on what someone else is doing. I simply have my own sets of short and long term plans that I gradually push forward, when and as I see fit.

Oh, re: the Astra titles for Timid Rabbit? Sure. I appreciate the credit, too. Thanks for asking!

While not a new upload from Tommy's channel, I had the pleasure of returning to Mark Arnold's podcast to help interview Tommy for his newest episode, which was uploaded recently. I think this went very well, and I hope others here enjoy listening to Tommy discuss his career
