As Strumm noted, that was always there. The clarity in the HD era can be brutal to the flaws of cel animation, revealing a level of detail no one was ever supposed to see. There is some DNR in bits and pieces here and there on Vol. 3, some glitches in the titles (time-compressed track for the titles of Rock-a-Bye Bear, no fade-in on the Little 'Tinker title card), and that dupe footage for Blitz Wolf sure looked better on earlier releases. But there will always be a gaffe or two on these things. The important thing is that this may be the overall best volume of the series in terms of both presentation and cartoon selection. There should be no hesitation to buy this. (It also shows that no, the criticism of Vol. 2 was: 1) not overblown, 2) almost certainly made a positive impact for Vol. 3 (I really was prepared to see those awful dark, DNR'ed versions for the '50s cartoons), and 3) did not cancel the series.)

Damn. You guys were spot on. I don't think I ever noticed that before, probably because the existing versions were so crappy. I'm more than happy to admit I had that wrong. (It was late and I had just gotten home from a really long day at work. No excuse though, when you're wrong, you're wrong. And I was.) And for the record, I never wanted to discourage anyone from buying the disc, it really looks great. This is exactly the kind of release we should be supporting...great classic content, very well restored and packaged at the right price without pointless trinkets and add-ons to bump up the MSRP.

Perfectly understandable, as I caught the turkey's disappearing hairs myself and went back and checked the analog copy and yup, they disappear there too. Looks like the ink wasn't adhering well to the cels. It's wonderful that they're left alone so we can see these in such great detail and these actually look like film and not modern video games and movies.

Huh? The fade-in is something that should be carried over from the film material, and it seems odd that they'd be using a separate audio source for the titles. Incomplete elements, or did they cheapen out on "restoring" the titles and recreate/fake them using still frames?

In any case, given how much of the work was done without George Feltenstein's oversight (or Jerry's, as implied in his Sept. 7 article), it still seems remarkable that this set turned out as good as it is. George's firing and the downplaying of Vol. 2's problems by you-know-who didn't leave much room for hope. I just wish they'd redo Vol. 2 properly, though that seems more like a pipe dream than a probability.

It looks like someone just screwed something up on the timeline or export, because they're the titles as filmed. Rock-a-Bye Bear's problem is a carryover from the old SD master.

I could tell right away it wasn't DVNR because it was too noticeable as the few pieces of DVNR were small (the only one I caught with bare eyes instead of a bit of film studying I did earlier today was the tongue scene in Deputy Droopy) and because the hairs disappeared too consistently for it to be DVNR. Overall, Thad's thoughts are also my thoughts, cartoons like Dan McGoo, Little Tinker, What Price Fleadom, and particularly Cock a Doodle Dog are huge upgrades, and this set is essential for everyone here, go get it!

I finally got the chance to watch the Blu-Ray today, and the restoration quality is great. On par with Volume 1. Wish "The Crackpot Quail" didn't have the Photoshopped titles the HBO Max version has, but I assume they used that version out of convenience.

Honestly would’ve loved if they put the raw scan of the nitrate print there as is.

There's some errant DNR on Popeye and the first Tex disc too, but that can be forgiven since it's not all over the place like it was on Volume 2.

I'm genuinely surprised to see Happy-Go-Nutty on here, because it was denied release by WB Legal, twice. Was the third time the charm?

If the people behind these sets cared about classic animation at all, they'd make it a priority.

It's not like Porky 101 where they were upfront that it wouldn't be a quote unquote restoration. It was a nasty bait and switch done out of unforeseen, extenuating circumstances.

Finished the set last night. My favorite cartoon on the set was probably a tie between Cock-a-Doodle Dog (gotta love the obnoxious rooster!) and Rock-a-Bye Bear ("QUIIIEEET!").

Mostly was pleased with the restorations, though there was one short- forget which one- where the pitch seemed higher. Or was it supposed to be like that?

I bought volume 2 even though I knew about the problems beforehand that were mentioned here and on a couple another websites. So then, no major screwups on this one?

All the issues you might be hearing here and elsewhere are barely worth mentioning and are just mere notes at this point. Essential for every Avery Fan

Not to add to the list, but there's a weird glitch in KING-SIZE CANARY. Between when the bottle lands in the dog's mouth and the cat takes off, a pause for a beat is removed. I would not have noticed this if the cartoon's soundtrack wasn't permanently burnt into my brain for three decades and it wasn't one of Bradley's most effective, powerful scores.

I compared the Blu-Ray with the laserdisc. Didn't really notice anything missing. Are there missing frames or animation?

Got my copy last week and I've already watched through it twice. I love it and will likely watch it a third time.

Two observations about Northwest Hounded Police

There is a brief cleanup error where the Wolf's dot moving from San Francisco to the Great Lakes is erased. You can see some faint marks moving across the screen where it should be. The dot reappears while he hops across the lakes and enters Canada.

Also a production observation. I'm not sure if this is documented anywhere, but I think the one shot of the police chief standing next to the Wolf's wanted poster may have been reshot at some point, most likely for the reissue. The colors are somewhat cooler than the following group shot, and it looks like the poster may have originally mentioned some kind of reward, with red text indicating a number and some additional red text underneath it.

Per Thad’s MGM filmography , the original version of the cartoon had a ceiling price reference that was removed in the reissue.

Here, have a disappearing Ed Love finger to go with the Mike Lah one from last volume.

I've been told an original copy of Northwest Hounded exists somewhere, so maybe one day we'll see it. You can look up a trade up to see what the second shot you posted originally looked it, there's also a poster scrubbed off the center I believe
