I have compiled a listing of all of the Fleischer/Famous Studio cartoons that are currently under copyright up as listed by the Catalog of Copyright Entries. You will find verification for these listings in the Catalog of Copyright Entries of the year that each cartoon was renewed. This compiling dates as far back as the 1927 Inkwell Imps, and lists all of the copyrighted cartoons through the 1949 Popeyes as the renewal entries end after 1977. Listed here are a few cartoons commonly thought to be public domain (there are 5 Color Classics under copyright, not 1). Some Popeye titles (The Two Alarm Fire, Robin Hood-winked, The Fly's Last Flight) that are believed to be under copyright were not listed under the renewal registrations. This does not necessarily mean they are public domain, just that they are missing from these copyright records. Cartoons are listed by Release Year and Series by alphabetical order (e.g Betty Boop, Color Classics, Popeye, Screen Songs).

Kudos to you for doing all that research.

It's pretty interesting that certain shorts (like the Lulu cartoon The Baby Sitter and the Gabby cartoon The Constable) are missing. If they weren't renewed, their absence from PD tapes is a mystery.

The Constable was indeed renewed in May 1968, and I seem to have missed it while going through these lists. The Baby Sitter is conspicuous in its absence, as is every other NTA-owned cartoon after 1945.

United Artist's renewal of the Popeyes at least makes sense. Most of them were renewed except for a few that slipped through the cracks (like all three two-reelers.)

NTA is all over the map. They're very diligent at first, but then they let whole years worth of cartoons slip by. Then they'll renew one or two cartoons from each series, and leave all the others go into the PD.
