People, this is not a drill! Disney will finally release the classic Mickey shorts on Blu-ray:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G26C16N/

It may only be 13 shorts, but it's a start and if this sells hopefully more will continue, so I recommend everyone buys it now.

While this is...something, at least, I'm gonna be a bit of a Debbie Downer and advise everyone to wait until more is revealed about this set before jumping straight to pre-ordering it.

Toonatic, where does it say that this Blu-Ray releases the "classic" Mickey shorts? There's no content list or description for one thing. Furthermore, if the restorations are anything like those grain-scrubbed "restorations" Disney's been putting out as of late, I'm gonna have to give this a pass.

Yesterday, I read something about the chances of a Blu-ray release of the Walt Disney cartoons being very low........and here we are! This sounds very, very promising for the rest of their short library.

Hope we get more of this in the future with the rest of their characters!

Cover's up (confirming the release will be a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack):

Ew. Unacceptable.

Plus, the way that Disney treats their classic library for Blu-Ray (rotoscoping the characters out of each frame and erasing any semblance of film grain), this might suck, anyway.

That cover is very poor. Why the wonky Mickeys? Is that colored Mickey an unholy fusion between the Paul Rudish Mickey and the 1920s/1930s Mickey? I really hope this is a temporary cover...

Yikes.

The fact that the most modern design here (which I've come to dislike after reading about what's going on with his shorts recently) is the only one in color is not a good sign.....and neither are the poorly-drawn sketches of Mickey (which, at least, give us some clues about what shorts could appear on this disc).

Ideally, this disc should contain the following shorts:
-Plane Crazy
-Steamboat Willie
-The Karnival Kid
-Mickey's Orphans
-The Mad Doctor
-Mickey's Gala Premier
-The Band Concert
-Thru the Mirror
-Clock Cleaners
-Lonesome Ghosts
-Brave Little Tailor
-The Nifty Nineties
-The Simple Things

That looks like a good cover. I see no issues with it. The perspective of the Mickey drawings, the sketchbook and the pencil is easy to understand once you look at it closely. The typography is well suited.

Any other changes would make the design more distracting.

I disagree. Those aren't the issues with the design. The issue is with the Mickey drawings. They're off-model attempts to mimic both the "classic" Mickey designs and the Paul Rudish ones. They're not even Mickey drawn in a different style; they're poor attempts to copy poses that could have been acquired just by taking snapshots of the old cartoons or digging into the Disney vaults.

Again, these off-model Mickeys make me really hope that this is a temporary cover.

I am trying to be optimistic about this release, but I fear the cover tells the tale, and it is not good. The fact that fully half the drawings of Mickey on the cover portray him from animations that come no where near to being "classics" is distressing and probably a reflection of the disc's content. We will be lucky to see 6 or 7 cartoons on this collection that meet most members of this forum's definition of classics, with the rest much newer, modernized filler animation. I hope I am wrong, but until the contents are confirmed I would not get my hopes too high.

What about the more recent theatrical films? Couldn't they be included on there? Granted, they aren't classic status yet ("Get a Horse!" isn't even five years old just yet), but it makes more sense to be included there than the recent Paul Rudish TV cartoons.

Come to think of it, does the inclusion of the Rudish Mickey (who is, unfortunately, the only "sketch" here who doesn't look like an off-model manifestation) on this cover hint at the inclusion of any modern material?

I'm not sure if they'll put any of the more recent theatrical shorts here; what you said, plus the length of more than half of the aforementioned shorts (they're both half-hour featurettes). I highly doubt they'll place Runaway Brain here (up until including it on one of the Walt Disney Treasures, Disney had cold feet on releasing it because of how much of an aversion it is to the way they market Mickey), but it would be cool if they included it as a bonus feature.....

I recall that "Runaway Brain" was released as a digital exclusive on the digital version of the Walt Disney Studios Animated Shorts collection that was released a few years ago. It's still a possibility.

Well, some sites say that the running time for the disc will be 99 minutes. That sounds quite right for circa 13 shorts (plus a bonus modern short because, well, why wouldn't they).......

Realistically speaking, I think this set should contain the following:
-Plane Crazy
-Steamboat Willie (confirmed; it's on the cover)
-The Karnival Kid
-Mickey's Good Deed
-The Mad Doctor
-Mickey's Gala Premier
-The Band Concert (confirmed; it's on the cover)
-Thru the Mirror
-Lonesome Ghosts
-Brave Little Tailor (confirmed; it's on the cover)
-Either The Little Whirlwind or The Nifty Nineties
-Mickey and the Seal
-The Simple Things
-Runaway Brain (bonus short)

With very little info on this release, I can't join in with the grumbles just yet. I'd be very surprised if the cover is final artwork (though I'm already surprised that what I suspect to be an initial rough to show the idea for the cover has been released for now). If this is a release which celebrates 90 years of Mickey, then it makes total sense to include at least one of the current and popular Paul Rudish shorts.
