speaking of spotty film restorations

month's ago I've bought their 2014 remaster of Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit (1977)

Warners, Is there a disc replacement for this?

The Good: The visuals are decent although dark. and with eyepoping colors like Thunderbean restorations :)

The Bad: During the scene where Bilbo was sleeping in the dry cave with the dwarfs, he was dreaming a flash back from earlier in the film, in Warner's 2014 remaster the green filter for the flashback is no longer green. and also the scene where the great goblin shouts at the sight of the sword glampring the foehammer, it appears the visuals speed up and did not synchronized up to the soundtrack until after the wiriling death of the great goblin.

and another thing, the soundtrack on the 2014 remaster is similar to the 2001 remaster. (missing sound effects and missing Rankin/Bass logo music, extra dialogue that was not used until the 2001 and 2014 remasters) there is speculation from people in youtube comments that Warners has used a work in progress audio for their remasters.

other films that had missing soundtracks The Captain's Christmas, How The Grinch Stole Christmas 1966 (the 1998 and 2006 remasters), The Wizard of Oz 1939

Okay, I'm sorry for being judgmental. I'm still a bit sore about the blog review though.

I wonder if they even looked in their vault for their copy of "Porky the Wrestler". Is it possible that an uncut copy is just there, sitting among dust?

I thought Jerry explained that situation on Stu Show back in august. Don't remember what was said.

Hopefully if this set (as well as future sets) sells well, they can rerelease it with the mistakes corrected. .

According to Jerry Beck, they won't fix the issues on the interpositives unfortunately.

They might correct those "mistakes" in future releases but that would require them go back to the original masters, not the inter-positives.

Regarding the opening audio, even if they exist else were it doesn't mean they exist on inter-positives. So the "errors" might be understandable for that reason if the audio was edited onto those shorts based on what they had available at time.

As for the picture quality, depends on which monitor you view it, view it on your laptop, it will looks fine. put into blu-ray and it will over blow the imperfections on the upscale. Both those new to DVDs short as well as those previously released on DVD.

As for the sales, haven't heard anything in while. Since it is almost month maybe it would be wise to ask Jerry about it maybe Next week or so.

Leonard Maltin posted his two cents on the Porky Pig 101 set. He expresses how he's happy to have another collection of black and white cartoons as well as another new Looney Tunes DVD. He might've been a bit too kind in places, but I do generally agree with his overall opinion.

I bet it won't be until after the next several months they will check the results on if the sales are going good on this DVD, but I hope it's good since I actually DO want more Looney Tunes and MGM DVD releases by Warner Archive.

When I watched Porky's Tire Trouble again I noticed some weird pixels appearing for a couple of frames when Flat Foot Flookey slowly walks along the platform (much like the error in the transfer of Shanghaied Shipmates). Can anyone check to see if this happens on their discs as well?
Error in question

Just checked around 3:07 and I can confirm that there is a brief instance of those pixelated blobs.

Yes! Looking forward to this! Wasn't on Amazon UK, which is why I haven't found it out until now.

Ummm, just curious... why exactly are you posting this quote from the Blu-ray.com forums? Couldn't you just have linked directly to the review, if that's what you wanted to share?

Thanks for linking to the Michael Barrier review. :) (His site has been more active than usual for the past few days; I probably wouldn't have checked back until next week myself.) Have to say I agree with pretty much everything he says here.

It's kind of sad us cartoon fans are subjected to such mediocre home video material. It seems no matter the set, there's anyways a few issues plaguing it, whether censorship, poor restoration, glitches, incorrect aspect ratios, and so many more. Live action films get so much better treatment than what we animation fans receive.

I'm glad we have companies like Thunderbean and Cartoons on Film, but those two alone aren't able to cover the wide spectrum of what this wonderful art form has to offer. It'd be nice if we had our own equivalent to the Criterion Collection or Shout Factory (I know both studios have produced animated DVDs and Blu-rays, but it isn't their primary focus).
