Net Neutrality is a law in the United States that makes all Internet Service Providers (ISPs, like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Verizon, etc.) treat all traffic equally. This means they cannot slow down websites for whatever reason, and they cannot block websites, either. Unfortunately, Ajat Pai wishes to repeal this protection. If Net Neutrality is repealed, ISPs can charge more to access certain websites, or even block some if they wish to. And no, even in the United States, changing your ISP isn’t always an option—where I live, you can only get Comcast.

If you live in the United States and don’t want this to happen, please look up your representatives. If they oppose Net Neutrality, please write a letter or call them and urge them to support keeping it.

A few of these resources will allow you to mail your representatives, but some may ask for your personal information, such as your home number and address. In other words, only do this if you feel comfortable with it!

  • You've probably seen battleforthenet.com all over the Internet within the past few days, but I might as well share a link to it as well. The site allows you to call Congress to voice your opinion. I couldn't get it to work, but maybe you'll have better luck than I did.
  • savetheinternet.com explains how this will affect marginalized communities [signing requires you to give your personal information, such as your home address]
  • The EFF has several good pages on the topic that urge you (but don’t require you) to contact your state’s representatives.

It's already mentioned in the savetheinternet.com link I posted in my original post, but the FCC will vote on this proposal on December 14.

The plan needs to be ditch, so keep it up on telling them to not kill our freedom on the internet.

Remember "We did it before and we can do it again."

Just to be sure, how do we find a phone number or email of our local congressman?

You may have seen a post going around saying that Portugal has no "net neutrality"--according to this site, they do. Specifically, they can't block or slow down Internet traffic, though you can still pay more for additional data for mobile devices.

The non-profit organization Freepress plans to take the FCC to court should Net Neutrality be dropped.

Because of the large amount of fake comments on the protections submitted to the FCC (including many which used actual people's names, which is identity theft), several members of Congress have called to postpone the vote so an investigation can take place.

Several states, including New York and California, are SUING the FCC to prevent Net Neutrality from being rolled back.

Thank goodness we are fighting back so the FCC's repeal won't happen.

On June 11, the FCC rolled back the Net Neutrality regulations.

However, do not think that we have lost. We already won in the Senate back in May. Please continue to contact Congress!

Brother. All I can think of right now about this stupid Internet move is this song. I think this sums it up (pun not intended):

On September 12, the EU will vote on Article 13, a bill which has been criticized for allowing automated filters to take down "infringing" content.

Check out https://saveyourinternet.eu/ for more info.

Unfortunately, it seems a rather draconian version of Article 13 passed.

However, there may be hope...
